Comedy and Katrina

I wanted to share these emails I got from bookers today:

Hello — Comedy, Inc. client!

Well, unless you have been in an underground bunker for the last month, you have noticed that gas prices have escalated tremendously. They say it affects everyone, and yes, the comedians that perform for you are hit 10x as hard as the typical U.S. Citizen since they travel everyday for a living. I’m not making it mandatory, but if you could extend an extra $20-$25 to each comedian performing for you, it would help a great deal on their end. I’ve talked with other agencies around the country, and they have established a mandatory raise in all of their accounts. I don’t want to make it mandatory as of yet, but for you to extend that offering on your end to the “Road” comics, who obviously drive hundreds of miles to perform for your patrons. Thanks in advance in your help, and as always, we appreciate your business, and the continuous support of Stand-up Comedy!

Sincerely,

and

AS SOME OF YOU KNOW I SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN NEW ORLEANS AND HAVE COME TO LOVE THE PEOPLE AND PLACES OF THAT OLD WONDERFUL HISTORIC CITY. I AM AT THIS POINT TRYING TO ORGANIZE SEVERAL BENEFITS TO BE HELD AT THE SAME TIME ON THE SAME DAY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY WITH THE COOPERATION OF SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS WHO OWN COMEDY CLUBS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THAT WAY WE CAN MAKE A BIG SPLASH IN HELPING THE PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS.
WE WILL NEED YOUR HELP. ANYONE WISHING TO DONATE A PERFORMANCE TO BENEFIT THE PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP AND SO WILL THE PEOPLE WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM YOUR GENEROSITY.
ALSO, IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS IN THE COMEDY BUSINESS THAT ARE WILLING TO HELP PASS ALONG THIS EMAIL.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE.

My friend with the goggles is OKAY:

Hi Tina,
I am okay. Thanks for checking in. My husband and family are in new hampshire at my parents cabin. I have a blog where I’m posting info:

I was in eastern europe for the last month and was supposed to return home to new orleans monday night. I got my ticket diverted to boston to stay at my sisters.

I’m exhausted.
Stay in touch
Niki

And on a silly note:

“Hurricane Katrina Safe List” posted by CNN.com was one “Ablohmie, Hayward J.” of New Orleans.

And apparently Mike Hunt of Biloxi is also okay.

SO glad your friend is okay. I hope all of them are. Here’s also hoping the comedy clubs will be very generous. For that matter, the management should ask that patrons each donate an extra dollar or two for the performers for gas.
